UGNES KARVELIS GIMNASIUM

A School That Nurtures More Than Knowledge

The reconstruction of the Ugne Karvelis Gymnasium is more than just a renovation project. It is a carefully reimagined educational environment where the focus is on the individual – growing, creating, searching for their place in the world.

The project began with a simple but essential question: what should a school be today? Not only functional and compliant, but also alive – breathing with light, natural materials, and the rhythm of its community.

From Outdated Infrastructure to a Sustainable Learning Environment

For years, the existing school building has served its purpose, but it is now too small for the growing community. Its structure is outdated, and its spaces no longer meet contemporary educational needs. Instead of opting for superficial improvements, a decision was made to embrace deeper, more meaningful change.

The current building will be fundamentally restructured: not only will the façades be updated and the envelope insulated, but the entire interior layout will be redesigned. The new plan introduces more light, spatial clarity, and freedom of movement – for both students and teachers.

Three New Volumes – Three Rhythms of Learning

Alongside the renovation, three new wings will be constructed. Each introduces a distinct spatial rhythm:

  • Block A – a classic learning environment focused on concentration and clear structure.

  • Block C – a hub for technology and interdisciplinary connections, open to experimentation and practice.

  • Block D – a space for sports and movement, where physical activity and team spirit find their place.

These volumes are not incidental additions – they form a coherent spatial narrative where function meets emotional connection.

A School Among Trees

The site is naturally framed by mature trees – one of the project’s key inspirations. Beneath a large oak, a wooden public terrace will be built – a shared space for the community, for outdoor lessons, conversations, or celebrations.

The surrounding landscape is designed to support the school as an all-day environment – from morning classes to afternoon activities and outdoor leisure.

Architecture That Reflects Values

This is more than a construction project – it is a vision of the school as a living, evolving structure. The architecture is designed to respond to the scale of a child, the rhythm of a teacher, and the voice of a community.

Between concrete, glass, and wood, there is also room for what cannot be seen – a sense of safety, curiosity, and the freedom to simply be.
