Three familiar living houses
Residential Housing Project in Raudondvaris, Kaunas
Urban Context and Site Layout
This residential complex stands in Raudondvaris, a district developed in the 1980s. Due to the narrow plot, the design naturally evolved into a linear, context-sensitive urban composition. The architect aimed to harmonize the client’s vision of having three solid and distinctive homes with a thoughtful layout that fits the environment.
To create privacy, a vertical wooden fence encloses the site. Trees further shield the courtyard from outside views, while paved areas support parking needs. Meanwhile, remaining zones are covered with grass, offering green relief within a dense residential area.
Architecture and Form
The three long, rectangular volumes emphasize minimalism and clarity. Instead of appearing monolithic, they feel approachable thanks to carefully integrated elements—corner windows, stairwells, and frameless glass panels. These features not only break the volume visually but also draw attention to key architectural gestures. For instance, a large, frameless window at the end of each common area extends the view outward, enhancing spatial openness.
Interior Planning and Flow
Each home has a clearly defined circulation. Upon entry through a corner entrance, visitors step into a foyer. From here, movement splits into two paths: one leads to a shared dining room and terrace, while the other reaches a separate kitchen. The kitchen includes two entrances and features a central island that discreetly houses the refrigerator. A bathroom is conveniently located near the entrance for guests.
A staircase running along the side of the volume leads to the upper floor. This level contains private spaces, including bedrooms at the rear and a centrally positioned bathroom and home office.
Materiality and Detail
The choice of materials reflects the neighborhood’s architectural language. Brick and concrete dominate, yet the use of different brick colors gives each house a unique identity. Importantly, the same construction logic unifies the ensemble. In select areas, the brick texture slightly protrudes, creating depth and rhythm on the facades. Evenly spaced lighting fixtures further enhance this subtle play of shadow and material.
